DRA was contracted by Barrick Gold Corporation to provide a fast-track design, build, commission and operate high recovery reverse osmosis brine treatment plant at their North Mara Gold Mine in Tanzania.
The high recovery plant was design to feed 13 ML/D brine from the reject of North Mara's existing low recovery water treatment plants. It would then concentrate the brine to an effective 97% recovery.
The project was required by the client on an urgent basis and necessitated a fast-track design approach whereby design, and construction occurred simultaneously and in collaboration with the client to meet the required deadlines.
The plant was built and commissioned in a record time of 11 months, achieving the client's governmental deadline of reducing their tailings storage facility water volumes to the required specification before 31 December 2021. Furthermore, the project was completed safely. A total of over 650 000 manhours were worked without any Lost Time Injury (LTI) being recorded. This achievement reflects DRA's commitment to Health and Safety and Zero Harm on all our projects.
Once commissioned, the plant was seamlessly handed over to the DRA Water Operations team who continue to operate and maintain the plant.
