DRA Global was awarded the full EPCM contract by Teal Mining, for the Konkola No. 2 Shaft project, situated in Northern Zambia. The project scope for the Konkola North Copper Project included refurbishing the mine shaft, which had been un-mined since the 1950’s, developing associated services for the shaft, developing a decline for a secondary mining access, surface materials handling, a 2.5 Mtpa copper concentrator, tailings dam, and all associated infrastructure.
Some of the challenges faced by the DRA Global team included, the level of Brownfield unknowns in the shaft, free issue steel to the erection contractor (GLTA), various underground mining concerns and poor ground and founding conditions for construction, the safety risk pertaining to the nature of works, especially in the vent shaft sinking and shaft refurbishment works, was particularly high for this project. A compressed deadline and budget also proved to be a major challenge.
DRA Global’s considerable knowledge and experience of Brownfield projects, enabled the DRA Global project team and Teal Mining to overcome all project obstacles. This resulted in the concentrator plant exceeding the maximum required throughput under stable conditions by more than 15%. DRA Global takes pride in completing projects safely, on time and within budget.
